EARLY SPRING!

EARLY SPRING! Last week, Thursday 4th August 2011, was according to the Bureau of Meteorology, the warmest August night in Melbourne since records began. Doonas have been flung off beds, flowers are flowering, windows to houses are wide open and in my house, we had the doors open to let in this unusually balmy winter night. And what you might ask, does this have to do with yoga? I'll try to explain below...

I'm not sure about fellow readers, but for me, the arrival of warmer weather propels me into action - getting the body moving off the couch and out from under the covers! Beds have been stripped and aired, doonas hung outside, pillows aired (well ok, that's the next job!) and I generally have more energy to undertake the tasks I had no energy for in winter. How does this happen? Are we really meant to hibernate in winter, like the bears? Unfortunately in our Western and modern world, that is not always possible nor practicable. Most of us work, and/or have families to take care of, children to get to school and of course to the wondrous icy ovals/sporting grounds on weekends where we huddle over a thermos of tea or hot chocolate, watching our offspring kick a goal or shoot a hoop, when what we all really were designed to do is hibernate in a cave with all our stored food we gathered over summer and spring to keep us nourished through winter.

So my point about warmer weather and yoga...lap it up! Revel in it, ride a bike, do some yoga stretches, take the family for a walk along the foreshore on the weekend and feel the sun warming your winter bones, nourishing the body with much needed Vitamin D. We are all too often deficient in this wondrous vitamin which is the old fashioned natural energy pill.
When the cooler days return (well it IS Melbourne!), get on your yoga mat, stretch and flex, and invest in a practitioner brand of Vitamin D!

"In the Spring, I have counted one hundred and thirty-six different types of weather inside of four and twenty hours" Mark Twain. (he must have lived in Melbourne at some stage in his life!)
